Jermuk waterfall – one of the brightest natural sights of Armenia. It is located at an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level near the town of Jermuk in Vayots Dzor. Waterfall, reaching a height of 68 metres, is the second highest in the country, second only to Kasakh.
According to legend, long ago on top of a cliff stood a castle of a local nobleman who had a very beautiful daughter. Many noble young men asked her hand in marriage but she refused all, because it is the will of fate fell in love with poor but handsome son of a shepherd. Every night she lowered from her window in the gorge of the rope, so that her beloved could meet her. Father, once learning of this, became very angry and said that if she ever meet him he will turn into a mermaid and will never be able to get out of the water.The daughter did not listen to his father and that night, not having a rope, she descended into the gorge with their long hair. Then was fulfilled his father’s prophecy – the girl turned into a mermaid, and her hair like water flows down from the cliff. Since then, people called this waterfall «Girlish braids» or «Waterfall Mermaid».
Due to the fact that the Jermuk waterfall is located amidst the beautiful natural landscape of the southern slopes of the Vardenis ridge, it is very popular among tourists. The falling water from the height of a flood, the bottom creates a huge amount of white foam and forms a cloud of spray. This amazing natural phenomenon fascinates with its beauty.
In addition, the waterfall has long been known for its healing properties. Mineral water from these sources contains a variety of chemical elements that are beneficial to the human body.
